美国老牌Grunge乐队Pearl Jam新专辑，终于用了一辈子只能用一次的同名专辑，新专辑听着依然有些复古现象，显得更直接，更平坦，而且更柔和，这些都说明PJ现在已经不是一支纯粹的Grunge乐队了。首支单曲World Wide Suicide还是一首典型的Grunge，简单的和弦、不紧不慢的节奏，随意的哼唱，吼叫，让人感觉到一种回归简单的肆意。专辑中更多的还是那些快慢结合、略显轻柔的歌如Come back、Inside Job，清新缓慢的吉他扫弦，配上一些钢琴伴奏，虽然当中也充满激荡起伏，但最终还是回归静谧，给人一种洒脱的感觉，而那首Parachutes更是有些乡村摇滚的感觉，虽然这些歌表现的都还中规中矩，但显然没有拿捏Army Reserve、Severed Hand、Unemployable这些歌的如火纯青。听着这些歌你才能依稀体会当年那支Grunge三巨头之一的活力！

Aerosmith's reign as America's greatest hard-rock heroes seemed all but over at the end of the '70s, the victim of internal squabbles, drug abuse, and a cocooned, decadent environment. Set against that backdrop, their '80's label switch and resurgence--and an eventual iconic, widespread acceptance even more pervasive than during their "prime"--was initially as gratifying as it was unlikely. This double-disc, 34-track compilation of the Geffen years chronicles a not-so-young band clawing their way back to the top with a hungry frenzy that shamed many upstarts half their age. With all the high points intact (including their groundbreaking rock-rap redux of "Walk this Way" with Run D.M.C., "Rag Doll," "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Love In an Elevator," "Janie's Got a Gun," "The Other Side," Cryin'" et al.), this compilation offers up the expected live extras (a handful of old hits and '90's staples), soundtrack cuts ("Deuces Are Wild" and the Doors' "Love Me Two Times") and sundry rarities (including the non-album cuts "Don't Stop" and "Can't Stop Messin'," B-side "Head First," and Japan-only "Ain't Enough")--though, sadly, no "Theme to Wayne's World." But by its waning tracks, it also documents the encroaching influences of hired-gun tunesmiths like Desmond Child and Glen Ballard, and the band's troubling tendency to hew ever closer to the middle-of-the-road as its fame burgeoned. Younger listeners may well treasure this album as a history of Aerosmith's golden years, B.D.--as in before Diane (Warren). --Jerry McCulley

When the London Suede's original guitarist, Bernard Butler, quit the band in 1994, Anglophiles from coast to coast breathed a disconsolate sigh. Butler had played with passion and power, crafting sweeping rhythms that perfectly complemented frontman Brett Anderson's melodramatic vocals. How could the group ever find a suitable replacement? Well, they did the following year when Richard Oakes joined, and between then and now Oakes has grown into a dynamic, swaggering, and sensual musician, imbuing Head Music with a sleazy, vibrant energy. Like the band's 1996 disc, Coming Up, the album brims with glammy incandescence. Songs such as "Electricity," "Elephant Man," and "Head Music" couple thrusting beats and sweaty riffs with yelping vocals and lascivious lyrics ("She's shaking obscene like a ****ing machine"). But the Suede also believe in candlelight and satin, as they prove on the more romantic fare of "Everything Will Flow," which glides along with mellifluous strings and delicate guitar lines, and the enigmatic "She's in Fashion," which writhes with bubbling guitars and sultry keyboards. --Jon Wiederhorn

Audiotransparent-Audiotransparent

Het illustere Living Room Records moet handenwrijvend hebben toegekeken toen Audiotransparent een aantal maanden geleden bij hun tekende. Fier moet het hebben staan kijken hoe de band het voorprogramma van de Tindersticks in de Oosterpoort en in 013 verzorgde. Trots moet het zijn geweest toen de band bij de VPRO-radio te gast was. Verrukt moet het zijn geweest toen de band in Simplon het debuut aan eigen publiek presenteerde. Een klein label komt met Audiotransparent groots naar buiten.

Audiotransparent is een uitvloeisel van jaren samenspel van een aantal jongens uit Assen en het maakt al tijden deel uit van de bruisende underground in Groningen. Het sterke aan deze scene is de diversiteit in het geluid en de internationale klank ervan. Hoogstaande muziek, waarbij je niet meteen kunt zeggen welke band er met kop en schouders bovenuit steekt. Audiotransparent is misschien wel het meest ingetogen van allen. Het klinkt integer, melancholisch, desolaat, maar vooral mooi. Audiotransparent heeft de triestheid van een herfstachtige dag. Referenties als Low, Timesbold en Madrugada schieten door mijn hoofd en ik plaats ze in het schitterende rijtje van Lullaby for the Working Class en Windsor for the Derby.
Omdat Audiotransparent het nummer Your God had aangedragen voor de sampler But You Don't Really Care For Music, Do You? van Living Room Records, was de basis van de samenwerking gelegd. Met behulp van Your God speelde Audiotransparent zich behoorlijk in de kijker bij muziekminnend Nederland. Het optreden op de afgelopen editie van Eurosonic en een plekje op de enerverende Silent Minority sampler zou je kunnen zien als resultaten daarvan. Living Room Records besloot Audiotransparent een 'home' voor deze 'hometapers' te bieden.
Klagend en vragend

Your God is ook op de cd van Audiotransparent gezet. Het is het laatste nummer en is een eruptie van de spanning die tijdens de plaat wordt opgebouwd. En die spanning begint al bij de opener Turn Over. In dit nummer wordt de toon van de plaat meteen gezet. Droevig, klagend en vragend wordt er gezongen over verloren liefde. Zanger Wouter Touw, die de wanhoop soms nabij lijkt te zijn, klinkt overtuigend. Na de intrigerende opener weet de band de spanning echter vast te houden. Al gaat dit niet zonder problemen. De spanning ondervindt hinder van het nummer Nothing All Around. Door een dissonante samenzang met Chantal Acda in het refrein wordt deels de overtuiging onderuit geschoffeld. Maar ondanks dit euvel wordt de luisteraar er snel weer bij getrokken en wordt er, zonder verdere storingen, richting de climax gewerkt.

Audiotransparent is erin geslaagd een boeiende, maar vooral een enerverende plaat aan de luisteraar te tonen. De songs zitten pienter in elkaar en de band heeft vooral geen moeite de luisteraar kippenvel te bezorgen. Wie nu nog durft te beweren dat Groningse popunderground op sterven na dood is, heeft het mis. Audiotransparent is niet voor het grote publiek. Het is een band om te koesteren. Het wordt een lange herfst.

Despite being a fan of Darren's previous work with Hefner, i bought this CD with some trepidation as i had found the French to be a bit of a letdown (don't get me wrong, i'm one of the Hefner fans who liked "Dead Media", but the French were just too much). However, i shouldn't have worried as this record is rather lovely. It's not a step back to the old Hefner sound, instead a step forward incorporating elements of all eras of his work into a rather cohesive whole.
